The Serenity was home to Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds, Zoe & Hoban "Wash" Washburn, Companion Inara Serra, Jayne Cobb (the hero of Canton!), Kaylee Frye, Siblings River and Dr. Simon Tam, and Shepherd Book as they helped Mal achieve a Captain's goals: "find a job, keep flying." The universe of Serenity was described in the opening narration of the show: "Here's how it is: The Earth got used up, so we moved out and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths. Some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. The Central Planets, thems formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule; a few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Serenity is a Firefly-class transport ship in the 26th Century. She was an early Series 3 Firefly, part of a fleet of approximately 28,000 eventually constructed. Acquired by Captain Mal Reynold in the year 2512, she was named for the battle at Serenity Valley, where Mal and the Independents he fought with lost a decisive battle against the Alliance. Serenity was 269' long, 170' wide, and 78' high with landing gear extended. She also contained 2 Shuttles capable of space and atmospheric flight and landing.
